Kraftlove is very fortunate to have been given the opportunity to partner with Inova Child Life Services. Kraftlove views its partnership with Child Life Services as such a wonderful opportunity because our mission is very much in line with theirs: we both want to promote an environment of normalcy, joy and healing for hospitalized children. Given the numerous opportunities for Kraftlove art boxes to be given to sick children, Jamie Gentille, Senior Manager of Child Life Services at Inova Children’s Hospital, shared that “Child Life Services is excited to partner up with Kraftlove to provide much needed artistic healing for our patients and their families at Inova Children’s Hospital.”
Child Life Specialists support children and their families during their hospitalizations by reducing anxiety, promoting positive coping, educating them about their diagnosis and procedures, and providing them all forms of support during their procedures. In addition to helping children and their families prepare for procedures, Child Life Specialists engage in medical and therapeutic play with the children and also provide sibling and bereavement support.
Jamie Gentille believes that “children speak the language of play” and Child Life Specialists takes that approach in building a rapport with their patients. Child Life Services also provides normalization activities for sick children in the hospital. In addition to hosting lots of parties and special events, Child Life Specialists invite magicians, princesses, and caricature artists to come and visit the children on a weekly basis. By providing interactive art projects that inspire creativity and encourage self-expression, we hope that our Kraftlove art boxes can be used as a tool to help open up dialogue between anxious patients and medical staff.
Kraftlove art boxes will be given to children in their hospital rooms who can’t leave their room or don’t want to. They can do the art projects with their loved ones to pass the time as they are anxiously awaiting a procedure or recovering from one. Moreover, Kraftlove art boxes can be given to a child after he or she has had a procedure to help them achieve their medical goals. For example, if a child has had an appendectomy, the child life specialist could encourage and motivate the child to get up and walk to the playroom by saying, “let’s go to the play room and do this craft.”
All of us at Kraftlove are extremely honored and excited to partner with Inova Child Life Services and are looking forward to working together to give a little love in every box to children and families at Inova Hospitals.
